Preparatory activities have commenced for the strategically focused project aimed at accelerating the integration of renewable energy sources and ensuring the stability of the transmission network, supported by the EBRD. During the kick-off meeting, which included teams from AD MEPSO, the Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources, representatives from the diplomatic corps, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Prof. Dr. Burim Latifi, Director General of AD MEPSO, emphasized the project’s significance as a central component of the “Just Energy Transition Investment Platform” (JETIP) initiative. The initiative employs our country to:
- leave energy production from coal gradually,
- integrate new renewable sources with a capacity of 1.7 GW until 2030,
- invest in the transmission and distribution network, and energy storage systems,
- enable just transition for the communities and workforce affected by such changes.
“One of the critical steps toward achieving these goals is the preparation of a detailed study on the development of the transmission network. This study will provide a clear roadmap for addressing challenges related to the integration of renewable energy sources and will contribute to updating our long-term plans. Thus, we will be well prepared to meet future demands that may exceed our current objectives. The study will be prepared considering the international expertise in Smart Grids, emphasizing modern technologies for enhanced control and efficiency. We will draw on the European Union’s and other countries’ experiences at advanced stages of the energy transition. A just transition ensures that no one is left behind. To this end, we are developing programs and local initiatives to support the economies of the most affected communities,” stated Latifi.
“The goal is to build a safe, reliable, and prepared power system, and MEPSO, as an integral part of it, is dedicated to modernizing the infrastructure, developing new substations, improving transmission capacities, and installing monitoring and protection systems. The success of this project depends on our competence in cooperation. I am assured that this partnership between EBRD, Ministry of Energy, ESM, MEPSO, MEMO, EVN, most of the green energy producers, and all stakeholders will be a success towards achieving the ambitious goals that are green, sustainable, and energy-independent North Macedonia.” said Latifi.
